Schupp Enamels Exhibited
During December 2005
Daylight
is brief during the month of December, the vibrant Autumn foliage begins to
drop and the Winter solstice approaches. It's a good thing that in December,
2005, our visitor center art gallery featured a colorful exhibit of flowers,
hummingbirds, landscapes and Southwestern scenes by Arboretum volunteers and
enamel artists Carole and Don Schupp. These self-taught East Valley artists
create Limoges (artworks in enamel) with colored, powdered glass that
is fired on copper at their Apache Junction home and studio.
Enamel
art has been Don's full-time profession since 1974 and Carole's since 1985.
They owned The Coppery Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico until 1983 and for
the past two decades made their living showing and selling works at juried
art shows throughout the country.
"Don works primarily with southwest images including petroglyphs, the
shadows of adobe buildings and seventeenth century northern New Mexico icons
called Santos," explains Carole. "I recreate Victorian houses with
flower gardens, vases of flowers, fish and scenes of our travels. Both of
us have begun to experiment with abstract Limoges; enamel really lends
itself to this vibrant use of color."
Don and Carole belong to the National Enamel Society and they are juried members
of Arizona Designer Craftsmen. They have also been commissioned for works
including a depiction of the Holy Trinity done in cloisonné
enamel, a piece that hangs over the Baptistry in the Church of the Master
in Denver, Colorado. They created the altar cross, processional cross and
stations of the cross in the penitente style for Sangre de Cristo Catholic
Community in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Additional clerical commissions include
pieces for St. Stephen Church in Sun Lakes, Arizona and Our Lady of Guadalupe
Church in Pojoaque, New Mexico. To see more of their work visit the web site
www.enamelsetc.com or correspond with
the artists via email at cndschupp@usermail.com
From December through May admission is taken from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.,
and the Arboretum closes promptly at 5 p.m. This show continues through December
30. Admission must be paid to enter the Visitor Center where our gallery is
located. Annual memberships at the Arboretum begin at $35, and include a year's
access, guest passes for your friends and family, along with many other benefits.
