Steve Davidson Photos Exhibited
January 1-31

Vivid images of Arizona flora and fauna - with a few familiar scenes captured in unfamiliar light - highlight our Visitor Center art gallery exhibit for the month of January. This marks the first one-man gallery exhibit of work by Mesa resident Steve Davidson, but many people have already viewed his impressive photos online at his galleries hosted at Pbase.com. Visitors and guests are invited to meet the artist at his gallery opening reception Sunday, January 8, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

"I’ve had a lifelong passion for photography since joining my high school newspaper as a sports photographer back in the late 60s. I learned film development and darkroom techniques there and was fascinated each time a picture magically appeared out of nowhere from paper dipped in a chemical bath. Though I have been commissioned for wedding and portraiture work over the years, my first love has always been nature and landscape photography. I take pictures for myself to capture snippets of the natural world that surround me while I am experiencing it."

"Photography is a wonderful avocation for me, and the perfect counterbalance to an intense and highly-technical professional career as a software developer. Photography is a relaxing and creative outlet and a great excuse for me to see and enjoy the great outdoors."

"The rise of digital photography fired my desire for greater photographic freedom and creativity. It allows me almost unlimited freedom to take as many pictures as I want and with the LCD display I can review pictures while in the field and make adjustments to capture better images. The digital darkroom allows me to do things with images I could never have dreamed of in a traditional darkroom."

Davidson was raised in Salem, Oregon and worked as a newspaper columnist and technology writer for the Statesman-Journal newspaper. He attended the University of Arizona on an athletic scholarship in the early 70s. Trained as a software developer, for the past 24 years he has created and improved student information management systems. Over the years he has lectured on software technology and astronomy. In 1998 he moved to Arizona, and has spent most of his free moments capturing scenes in the Superstition Mountains, along the Mogollon Rim and in Eastern Pinal County.

Davidson's exhibit in the Boyce Thompson Arboretum visitor center will continue from January 1-31. To see more of his work visit the web site http://www.pbase.com/azleader/boyce_arboretum or correspond with the artist via email to stdavid@cox.net.
